Biblical Proof Texts in the Disputatio contra Arium: A Retrospective Reading of the Arian Controversy

Building upon my earlier essay, “Die pseud-athanasianische Disputatio contra Arium” (in: TU 164, 2010, 133–155), this presentation provides a detailed critical analysis of the biblical passages cited within the Disputatio contra Arium (CPG 2250). We will specifically analyze the methodologies and interpretive principles applied to scripture throughout this fictional debate. Furthermore, we will trace the formation of the corpus of dicta probantia evident in the text, interpreting the Disputatio as a (relatively) early reflection of the theological consensus on Arianism, thereby situating its construction within the broader history of patristic argumentation and theological development.
